My name is Julie Hiscox and welcome to Harlequin Sewn Crafts!
The goal of this site is to share my love of all things sewing and pass along the knowledge I have gained over a lifetime of sewing.
A bit about me. I grew up in a family of seven children and, as you can imagine, my mother had to budget carefully to keep all of us fed and clothed. One of the ways she did that was by sewing clothes for all of us. The photo below is of all of us Christmas 1964. Note the matching shirts on all my brothers.
I don’t believe any of us appreciated the work and care my mother took sewing those clothes for us but I am forever grateful that she taught me to sew. The Christmas my parents gave me my first sewing machine is still a treasured memory. I was so excited.
Over the years, sewing was a shared activity for my mother and I. It was always something we could bond over even when we were having difficulties in other areas of our lives. Although there were stretches of time when I didn’t sew, I always returned to it as my creative outlet.
I love making clothes for myself and others, especially baby clothes. Bags and purses are also fun for me. Quilting is my newest passion and the most recent one passed to me by my mother.
My mission for this website is to:
- Provide tips, techniques and tutorials for sewing projects with clearly explained instructions and photo illustrations of the process. My aim is to ensure that you get information you can use immediately to improve your sewing projects.
- Provide reviews of resources, patterns and classes that I have used so you can use my experience to help select what you need to learn new techniques, find helpful tools and excellent teachers.
- Build a community of sewists who share their knowledge, experience and passion for creating sewn crafts. It is a proud tradition that combines design, art and material engineering to build the structure to support the shape we want for our fabric.
I am so excited to share this journey with you.
